Meddies Rock Opening Concert of the Semester

Meddies eye auditions later in week

At 8:00PM, the Bowdoin College Meddiebempsters took the stage in the Bowdoin Chapel to close the opening a cappella concert of the year. After spectacular performances by The Longfellows, Boka, Bellamafia, Ursus Verses, and Miscellania, the crowd was ready for the Meddies to close the show with face-melting melodies.

True to their barbershop roots, the boys in blue opened their set with "Coney Island Baby," a Meddie favorite. The antics of Brian Wu, Chris Li, and Louis Weeks got the crowd laughing while enjoying the close 4 part harmony that flows under the lyrics.

Demonstrations of comedy and harmonic blend are not where the Meddies stopped. "Another Night with the Boys," a song by the a cappella quintet, The Persuasions, was led by sophomore Brian Wu. After the concert, a friend approached another Meddie and said, "That guy that sang the second song has a great voice. He must get all the girls!" A slight glance over to Brian, or Brain as he is affectionately known in the group, revealed the truth: 4 girls had encircled the soulful boy wonder.

The Meddies are truly known for their showmanship, and a Meddies' set is never complete without a showstopper to close the concert. Enter George Aumoithe, a sophomore soloist who completely dominates Patti Smith's "Because the Night," arranged by Jeff Freidlander M '08. "Because the Night" was a hit from the previous school year, and it did not disappoint as the crowd of over 500 people crammed into the Bowdoin Chapel lept to their feet at the conclusion of the song.

The Meddies are psyched for the upcoming year, and even more excited about auditioning for new members of the group. The group is hoping to take 3-4 new Meddies on, and are looking for Basses, tenors, and vocal percussionists. Auditions will be held from 9-11 PM September 15th and 16th in Lancaster Lounge, Moulton Union.
